Why we love what we do
Baldor is a grassroots family company, born from the streets of New York City from only a dream and a lot of hard work. Because we see the value in helping others in our community, we instituted our Baldor Cares program to support others and feed those in need. Baldor’s home is the Hunts Point area of the South Bronx and this is where we concentrate our charitable energies. We actively engage with organizations that help the people in our community and throughout the tri-state area.
Our charity partners include:
City Harvest
Supplying our customers with quality food is central to the Baldor Cares mission. On a daily basis there is an overflow of food in our warehouse. Baldor has teamed up with City Harvest to deliver that product to help feed millions of New Yorkers. In 2013 Baldor donated nearly 500,000 pounds of food to City Harvests.
Lustgarten Foundation
Baldor is an active supporter of the Lustgarten Foundation in their efforts to find a cure for pancreatic cancer. Our founder, Kevin Murphy, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2010 and passed away January, 2013. Ever since, we have been a major sponsor of their Annual Cure for Pancreatic Cancer Walk in Manhattan.
Edible Schoolyard NYC
As part of our ongoing effort to champion food education, we support students from participating schools in preparing meals from the fruits and vegetables they grow in their own schoolyard gardens. These interactive cooking sessions take place nearly every day, and Baldor contributes by donating the ingredients needed to complete and cook these educational meals.
Part of the Solution (POTS)
Part of the Solution is a fully functioning soup kitchen that serves family style meals to those in need. They also address the basic needs of their community, offering resources such as grooming services, childcare, mail services and daily hygiene facilities. The executive director of the organization, Mary Alice Hannan, says “our mission is driven by our guests’ needs rather than driven by what funds are available.” POTS is an integral part of the Bronx community and offers invaluable help to those in need.
Underserved Schools in the South Bronx
We are dedicated to improving the quality of life of kids in our Bronx backyard. The majority of Baldor employees were born and raised in the Bronx and we seek to show by example the opportunites that lay ahead. In 2014 we hosted 30 children from the nearby Hyde Charter School for a cooking demo given by renowned chef, Michael White. The kids left with a goody box containing all the ingredients to reproduce the same healthy pasta dish at home for their families. Interactive student demos are part of a growing educational program at Baldor’s Bronx Culinary Stadium. Baldor also helps keep the Bronx a thriving community in which to live and work through our involvement in organizations as SOBRO, the BOEDC and the Hunts Point Economic Development Council.
