Crenshaws are a hybrid California melon with very sweet, succulent, dense orange flesh. The skin color can range from dark green to bright orange which doesn't indicate ripeness but has more to do with growing conditions. The ridged skin of a Crenshaw will give slightly to the touch when ripe. It will smell so sweet and melon-y you will be seduced into buying one just walking past a display.
